Rumour of rift between Akeredolu and Asiwaju is false - Fulani

By Lanre Oloyede

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dele Fulani, has debunked the rumour of rift making the rounds in some section of the media between governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and the national leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as false.

Fulani stated that the rumour is nothing but a made up tissues of lies peddled by some mischief makers to achieve their selfish and parochial objective, adding that the governor remained undaunted and undistracted in his political pursuit by the cheap ploys of the detractors.

While admitting that though, there were subtle differences between the two astute politicians from the southwest in the past, he revealed that that has, however, since being resolved.

Fulani described the current relationship between the duo as smooth and cordial like that of two loving brothers.

The party chieftain stressed that governor Akeredolu himself confirmed this before leadership of the party at the national secretariat of APC in Abuja when he alluded to the fact that he dealt directly with some power brokers in the presidency to ride to power in 2016 but today he is enjoying the support of the Lagos based politician.

Governor Akeredolu had reportedly said in Abuja after submitting his nomination form that, " In 2016, it was Akure and Abuja. But today, it is Akure, Lagos and Abuja."

Unlike in 2016, the two time former governor of Lagos State has since maintained a neutral posture in the politics of Ondo as he has refused to publicly show interest in any of the aspirants battling for the governorship ticket of APC.

Fulani, however, believed if there is any candidate Tinubu is rooting for among the twelve aspirants, it is governor Akeredolu.

He expressed his optimism that the governor will win the primary election slated for Monday July 20, 2020, and go ahead to be re-elected in the October 10 governorship election in the State.

Why I'm on a rescue mission in Ondo - Adelami

By Lanre Oloyede

Immediate past deputy clerk to the national assembly, Chief Olayide Owolabi Adelami, has declared that he decided to join the governorship race in Ondo State because he is on a rescue mission  to liberate his people from the manacles of poverty, deprivation and politics of exclusion that has kept them in perpetual doldrums despite the enormous resources the State is endowed with.

Adelami stated this at the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, APC, when he was been presented with nomination and expression of interest forms purchased on his behalf by his supporters under the auspices of Ondo State Rescue group.

The experienced accountant and business administrator with 35 years of meritorious public service and outstanding record of accomplishments at the national assembly and other federal government parastatals said if given the mandate to lead the State as the Executive governor, he would make people oriented programs the priority of his administration.

"Local government autonomy will be my first priority as governor. I will grant financial autonomy to the local government because being the government at the grassroots, I believe if they are given the freedom to utilize the fund voted to them for the people, it will go a long way in ameliorating the suffering of the people at the grassroots," Adelami said.

Speaking on behalf of Ondo State Rescue group, Mr Olawale Ogedengbe who presented the forms on behalf of the group to the governorship aspirant, said the group which comprises of students and youths from all across the State decided to contribute their little earnings together and obtain nomination form for Adelami because they believed in his credibility and capability to lead the State to the next level.

Also speaking,  Mr Adekola Ajibola, a representative of the vulnerable and physically challenged group in the State testified to the antecedents of the governorship aspirant on how he has been transforming the lives of the physically challenged, particularly, those with talents whom he identified, mentored and nurtured up to the university level to realize their dreams.

According to Mrs Abdullahi Mariam, a representative of the widows and orphans in the State, Adelami has, through his family foundation, Elizabeth Foundation, which he founded with his wife, affected the lives of widows and orphaned children by feeding, clothing and paying their children's school fees and medical bills.

Adelami is one of more than ten aspirants who have indicated interest to contest the APC primary election slated for July 20, 2020 to determine the party's flagbearer for the October 10 governorship election in Ondo State.

Ondo State Professionals meet AKEREDOLU, canvasses for consolidation, sustainability and professional integrity in governance.

By Lanre Oloyede

In continuation of its advocacy mission as the gubernatorial election hots up in Ondo State, members of the Ondo State Professionals Forum, Abuja (OSPFA), led by its Chairman, Arc. Tunde Imolehin met with the Governor of Ondo State, Arakurin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, and convassed for continuity, consolidation, sustainability and professional integrity in governance.

The purpose of the visit was to further familiarize and intimate the governor with some of the activities of the group and to also rally support for his re-election bid.

The meeting which had in attendance, the Chairman, Arc. Tunde Imolehin, Secretary, Mr. Dele Fulani, Mr. Lekan Olotu and other members of the Forum was largely successful and monumental.

The OSPFA had a fruitful deliberation with His Excellency that culminated in a robust and harmonious  working agreement towards realizing the unassailable victory for the governor at the poll.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Forum Chairman, Arc. Tunde Imolehin , stressed that the Forum was established to promote the pristine ideals of professionalism in all strata of the society particularly governance which the governor stands for as a thoroughbred professional and a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) with a distinguished record of service.

He said the group was impressed with the catalogue of unprecedented achievements recorded by the governor in the area of infrastructural development within just three years in office.

Imolehin pointed out in particular, the construction of the road leading to his town, Ipele, for which the people of the community have suffered for so many years.

He praised the governor for taking up the gauntlet and defying all odds posed by the dwindling global economic fortune to put smiles on the faces of the people in the state.

The chairman said the group was ready to roll up its sleeve  and go into the field as well as nooks and crannies of the State to campaign for the Governor to secure a second term in office. He also stated that the group would reach out to other aspirants with a view towards encouraging them to support continuity and sustainability of the present administration in Ondo State.

He concluded by saying that the Forum was ready to support the re-election bid with what all the members have got including cash and kind.

Also speaking, the Forum Secretary, Mr Dele Fulani eulogised the governor for taking the bold step he took in achieving the giant strides he has recorded so far.

Fulani specifically thanked the governor for leveling and reconstructing the popular Oke Alabojuto hill which has been a major cause of fatal accident leading to the loss of innocent lives of the people of the area for so many years.

In his response, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu thanked the group for its support and solidarity towards realizing the goal of his re-election come October 10, 2020.

The Governor recalled the unflinching support he has been receiving from the chairman of the Forum, Arc. Tunde Imolehin, which dated back to 2012 and his consistent contributions to the party.

While answering questions from the media crew  from Nigerian Pilot Newspaper, the governor promised to work with the group, and also used the medium to reel out some of his numerous projects to be executed in his second term, top of which included the signature project of Port Ondo which has the potential of stimulating industrial revolution in the state and generating thousands of employment opportunities for the youths.

Democracy Day presents opportunities to reflect on prospects over challenges - Amb. Tukur

By Lanre Oloyede

Renowned diplomat and one time Nigeria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, London and Equatorial Guinea, Ambassador Hassan Ardo Tukur, has advised Nigerians to utilize the opportunity of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration not only to reflect on the challenges encountered by the country in the journey to nationhood but rather focus more on the enormous prospects awaiting the nation in the future.

In a statement to newsmen in Abuja, Amb. Tukur stated that in the wake of the celebration, Nigeria will be presented with choices: “to start a pity-party about our socio-political challenges (which everyone already knows), to weep over all of our missed opportunities or we will be presented with the choice of re-writing the wrongs and weaving together a future that posterity will be grateful for; a future that we will be a part of as much as the kind that is solid enough to support the dreams of the next generation.”

He admonished Nigerian leaders on the need to build a better future for the incoming generations, stressing that we “need to get our acts together and join the league of Nations who are on the forward march which is where we deserve.”

In his words, "We will roll our sleeves and build together -- leaders and citizens alike. We will use all of the tools of developments that we can muster and leverage technology to leap-frog in our forward march.

According to Tukur, great men plant trees whose shade they know that they wouldn’t seat under and the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, but the next best time is now.

Commenting on the mandate of the URNI Initiative, the former Ambassador who has served under various capacities as diplomat reiterated that the initiative is set to mobilize a mass of change agents and leverage on the scaling effect of technology to push for a positive renaissance of nationhood.

“We will tell our story in a way that fosters hope and emphasizes the positives and hopefully create a new narrative that will contribute towards making our nation a desirable one to live in.

He further noted that URNI has lined up activities and events leading up to Nigeria’s 60th Independence Day celebration in October, which will precede the official flag-up of the Unveiling and Rebranding Initiative billed for October 3 2020 in Abuja Nigeria.

Ondo Guber: Group rallies support for Akeredolu’s re-election bid

Ondo Guber: Group rallies support for Akeredolu’s re-election bid

By Lanre Oloyede

A group under the auspices of Ondo State Professionals Forum, Abuja (OSPFA) has called on all sons and daughters of Ondo residing in the Federal Capital Territory and the diaspora to support the re-election bid of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for the greater benefit of the entire people of the State.

The Forum made up of selected professionals of Ondo extraction drawn from different walks of life said its position was informed by the need to sustain the current momentum of development being piloted by the governor.

In a press statement themed: “Sustaining the Uncommon Strides in Ondo State” and co-signed by its Chairman, Architect Tunde Imolehin and Secretary, Mr Dele Fulani, the group stressed that there was need to consolidate on the monumental achievements that have been recorded by the current administration in the areas of infrastructural development, youths empowerment, job creation, wealth creation and industrialization.

“When you talk of infrastructural development, Governor Akeredolu has literarily transformed the hitherto hard-to-reach rural areas of the State into modern cities through massive construction of state-of-the-art access roads, storm water drains, overhead bridges, provision of rural electrification, potable water supply among many others too numerous to mention,” the group averred.

It added that, though its position does not disregard the rights of other citizens to aspire for any position of their choice in the state, its motive for mobilizing support for the governor’s second term bid however became more necessary because of the need to forestall the ill-fate that usually befall people oriented projects set in motion by a one-term governor in the event of premature change of government.

“Apparently, we all eknow from experience that premature change of government in Nigeria is usually characterized with lack of continuity in governance. As it is the practice, instead of continuing with the development trajectory he or she met on ground, every successor would rather crave for his own new 7-point agenda while the predecessor’s projects are either discontinued, abandoned or cancelled outrightly. At the end, it is the innocent taxpayer citizens of the State that bear the brunt.  We cannot allow all these uncommon achievements of the Governor to be rubbished on the altar of political expediency,” the group asserted.

The forum however stressed that it remains committed to supporting the continuity project of the governor with all resources at its disposal including intellect, clouts, cash and kind.

Corruption allegations against NIRSAL handiwork of detractors - HURIWA, others

Corruption allegations against NIRSAL handiwork of detractors - HURIWA, others

By Lanre Oloyede

Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, led by the famous Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has declared as baseless and unfounded, the allegations of corruption levelled against the leadership of  Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending, NIRSAL PLC.

The group has, therefore, demanded that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu  commence immediate  investigation within seven days by inviting  for interrogation, "these bunch of detractors, traversing the entire length and breadth of the media industry in their campaign of calumny against the Management of NIRSAL PLC  under its Managing Director,  Mr Aliyu Abbati Abdulhameed."

In a press conference addressed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the Coalition which consists of 16 organizations drawn from  across Nigeria but led by HURIWA claimed that some  faceless elements who hide behind compromised social media platforms are responsible for the vicious and sustained campaign of calumny against the institution that is playing a key role in the transformation of Nigerian agriculture sector.

According to the group, the allegations which ranged from mismanagement of funds by its current leadership to claims of discrimination and favouritism is nothing but falsehood.

The Coalition  urged the Presidency not to be deceived by this evil campaign against the person of the MD of NIRSAL PLC  because those making these baseless allegations are working hard to scuttle the government's agenda for agriculture revolution.

The group added that the perpetrators have forged fake documents, organised fake protests, sponsored fake farmers groups and induced unprofessional media platforms which lack integrity to publish unverified falsehoods against the institution in order to achieve their nefarious objectives.

The Coalition saw it as totally incredible  that an institution that is working so hard for the country, without any budgetary appropriation by the Federal Government nor allocation of funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria, yet achieving solid results in a critical area of national development such as agriculture, can be subjected to endless attacks in pursuit of nefarious political goals and negative economic interests.

While providing reasons why the allegations against the agency should be discountenanced, the group said, "First, the efforts to distract and even disable NIRSAL PLC  is not in the interest of the nation because this 5-year-old institution’s mandate as given to it by the Central Bank of Nigeria, its sole shareholder, is central to the focus on agriculture by the Buhari administration, the sector that is the number one employer of labour and the lynchpin of the nation’s plans for a post-oil future.

"Second, there is clear evidence that NIRSAL PLC  is doing justice to its mandate. It is an established fact that the institution, in just a few short years of its corporate existence has facilitated about N110 billion from the financial sector into agriculture. In the process, it has contributed to the creation of millions of jobs and the improvement of the lives of smallholder farmers across the country.

"Third, NIRSAL PLC  is adding significant value in other areas, notably agricultural insurance where it is working with partners to create and popularize innovative insurance packages that will reduce the risks faced by Nigerian farmers and help them to benefit more from their toil.

"Fourthly and related to the above, the institution is making brisk progress with its AgroGeoCoops scheme which is projected to create about 16,000 farmer-cooperatives on 4 million hectares of farmland, enrol about 8 million farmers to produce about 12million metric tonnes of Grain Product Equivalent annually, across Nigeria."

NIGERIA @ 60: REKINDLING HOPE AND CHANGING OUR NARRATIVES

NIGERIA @ 60: REKINDLING HOPE AND CHANGING OUR NARRATIVES

By the 1st of October this year, our compatriots will be celebrating 60 years of our nationhood. Indeed, we’ve come a long way together and this period offers us an opportunity to reflect on the journey so far -- the challenges that we have faced (and are still facing) and the opportunities that stare us in the face. In all of these, we will be presented with choices -- to start a pity-party about our socio-political challenges (which everyone already knows), to weep over all of our missed opportunities. Or we will be presented with the choice of re-writing the wrongs and weaving together a future that posterity will be grateful for; a future that we will be a part of as much as the kind that is solid enough to support the dreams of the next generation.

It has been said that great men plant trees whose shade they know that they wouldn’t seat under and as we may have heard the saying that, the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago (or even 60, as in our case), but the next best time is now.

We will need to get our acts together and join the league of nations who are on the forward march. That’s what we deserve.

"We will roll our sleeves and build together -- leaders and citizens alike. We will use all of the tools of developments that we can muster and leverage technology to leap-frog in our forward march.

Commenting on the mandate of the That’s what we stand for and our message at the Unveiling and Rebranding Initiative (URNI). We will be doing our part to mobilize a mass of change agents and leveraging on the scaling effect of technology to push for a positive renaissance in our nationhood. We will tell our story in a way that fosters hope and emphasizes the positives and hopefully create a new narrative that will contribute towards making our nation a desirable one to live in. We have lined up a number of activities and events leading up to our silver jubilee celebrations in October. These activities and programmes will precede the launch of the Unveiling & Rebranding Initiative billed for the 3rd of October 2020 in Abuja Nigeria.

As we understand that the process of change is not a walk in the park, our strategy will entail a 10-year development plan encapsulated as the URNI Vision 2030 which will also be unveiled at this epoch-making event.

Worthy of mention is that this initiative is promoted by a team of active citizens from different walks of life and championed by some distinguished Nigerians among whom is Amb. Hassan Tukur, OFR, who has served the country in different capacities over the last 4 decades. There will be several engagements monthly leading up to October this year, some of which include: roadshows, campus tour, community engagements and town hall meetings, the making of the book -- faces of patriotism, football competition/unity league et cetera.

It’s also our belief that all hands must be on deck for the work of nation-building to succeed and therefore, we would be calling on all stakeholders to come together, irrespective of tribal, religious, or political affiliations to make our nation work, even at this auspicious moment. Towards the launch of the URNI Vision 2030, we are making a clarion call for collaborators, partners, sponsors, and volunteers towards making this programme and vision a success.

More information can be found on our website: Http and do keep an eye on our social media platforms to stay informed of our activities.

I am Nigeria. You are Nigeria. We are Nigeria. Nigeria needs us!

Covid -19: Analyst Wants Isolation Centres Renamed Treatment Centres

Covid -19: Analyst Wants Isolation Centres Renamed Treatment Centres

By Lanre Oloyede

Notable Architect, Environmentalist and Development Communication Expert, Chief Tunde Imolehin, has suggested to the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, PTF, to consider the idea of renaming the isolation centres where victims of the highly contagious coronavirus disease are being contained as treatment centres.

This, he said, will help to prevent stigmatization and as well encourage many Nigerians to voluntarily submit for covid-19 test.

Imolehin spoke exclusively to Newstrendtv while reacting to the rate of defiance of Nigerians to the guidelines guiding the partial easing of lockdown which began Monday.

Newstrendtv  had earlier observed and reported how citizens trooped out Monday en mass to public places like banks, and bus-stops with flagrant disregard to the social distancing protocol as directed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC and the PTF.

Imolehin, a former member of the Strategic Communications Committee of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, said: "Just like I frown at the continuous retention of the word, "Force" in the name of the Nigeria Police, the isolation centres should be renamed Treatment centres to prevent stigmatization and encourage many to voluntarily submit for COVID-19 test.

Another prominent Nigerian who has alluded to this idea is Jake Ekpelle, President/Founder of Albino Foundation.

Ekpelle gave the idea a nod when he appearded on a public education programme on covid-19 monitored on television by Nigerian Pilot.

With reports that the isolation centres are in bad conditions across the country, there are fears that Nigeria may experience massive covid-19 test apathy.

According to experts, this may spell doom for the nation in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Recall that the NCDC had earlier announced it has a target of testing one million Nigerians in the next three months in order to stall community transmission of the virus.

Nigeria currently has about 2,802 confirmed cases of covid-19 with 417 already treated and discharged while 93 deaths have been recorded.

Lagos remains the epicentre of the virus with 1,183 confirmed cases, closely followed by Kano with 365 cases while FCT is in third place with 297 confirmed cases.

AKETI and the Second Term Debate

AKETI and the Second Term Debate

By Tunde IMOLEHIN

First, let me greet all our Muslim brothers and sisters during this unusual Ramadan period. May Allah grant your prayers and supplications, Ameen.

I also want to identify with our government and people of Nigeria at this very difficult period of a novel coronavirus pandemic. May we all be victorious over COVID-19, Amen.

The Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has shown great leadership - good enough to earn him respect and second term in office, if at all, because I have reliably gathered that he is not desperate to return. He believes that the people will return him if he so deserves.

Although not a saint, Governor Akeredolu has shown that he can be trusted with power. In the South West region, he demonstrated extreme and uncommon courage through Amotekun. He is fearless, bold, blunt and decisive. Many people are not comfortable with blunt, undiplomatic leaders. I am aware that he is often referred to as a novice in politics because of this trait.

Whereas this may appear like an endorsement (it can pass, really), I must not shy away from the truth. With what we have seen so far, Aketi ranks high amongst his peers, and in the history of Ondo State; he remains one of the best, if not the most focused. So why should we derail a good process? Why should we throw the baby with the bathwater?

Akeredolu is not flawless. No, like every human; he is not. For instance, he could have overcome whatever forces that made the fragmentation of APC unavoidable. He could, also, as a politician and the leader of the party in the state, have played the RIGHT politics to make more friends than enemies. But when you look at the trajectory of service under his leadership since he assumed position as Governor in 2017, one cannot but pardon his seeming weakness in other areas. We are all human, anyway. For me, the "devil" I know is better than a saint that I do not know.

Aketi is tested. He is visionary. He may have his shortcomings but I am convinced the Sunshine State will do better if we strongly encourage him to serve us more after his first tenure.

As a party, we cannot afford to lose a performing and successful incumbent. He too, should reach out, mend fences. Politics is give and take but without compromising the integrity of the office he holds in trust for the people. This submission is made without prejudice.

BUHARI: Like Salihijo, like Abba.

BUHARI: Like Salihijo, like Abba.

By TundeIMOLEHIN

One of the first files on President Obasanjo's table, when he assumed the leadership of Nigeria for the second time, albeit as a democratically elected President, was the defunct PTF file.

Many who saw the PTF as nothing but a Sanni Abacha product could not wait for the scrapping of the fund despite its unprecedented successes. Yes, you heard me: successes. They argued, they lobbied, they did all they could do to scuttle what was and still the most audacious infrastructural development initiative by any government in Nigeria.

Like Abba, Salihijo Ahmad, a brilliant quantity surveyor and highly detribalized Nigerian, was the anchor-man of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund. SA, as he was fondly called, was a maverick, witty and hard-working but a no-nonsense administrator who had his job well cut out for him.

With his professional friends, most of whom had occupied and still occupy important positions in government; SA was unarguably the field marshal of the multi-billion naira intervention fund. He was courted by the high and mighty. He was the man of the moment. Knowing SA at that time was seen as the surest way to wealth and success. But not on a platter.

The Afri Projects Consortium (A.P.C), of which he was the torch bearer, was a company put together by professional friends, most of whom had attended the famous Ahmadu Bello University. Architects, Engineers, Quantity Surveyors and the likes, and because of their outstanding records in project management, had caught the eyes of Muhammadu Buhari, retired General and Chairman of the multi-sectoral intervention fund.

Although the PTF had an administrative structure in place, it was also empowered to hire consultants to execute the projects as it deemed. This must have informed the appointment of A.P.C as the co-ordinating consultants of the PTF project with Salihijo Ahmad as the defacto contact person even though he was not the Managing Director of the Consortium.

The recent revelations that Buhari would never be comfortable entrusting responsibility to a stranger must have informed the choice of SA. Call it super delegation or abdication, you can never fault the President when it comes to quality engagements.

Why he abdicates or delegates is not the subject of this write-up; so, I’ll not delve into that but the similarities in the appointments, histories of service and tragic exits of  Adamawa-born Salihijo Ahmad and Borno-born Abba Kyari, both brilliant professionals, friends and confidants of President Muhammadu Buhari caught my attention especially at this time when all manner of tributes are pouring for Abba despite the unfortunate gloating and of course, the question of succession as well as the philosophy behind Buhari's style of leadership.

Although Salihijo and Kyari were friends and close associates of Muhammadu Buhari, they operated on different platforms in governance and at different times in the nation's history. While Salihijo was the anchor of a sensitive National Intervention Agency, Abba was the Chief of Staff to a President who entrusted him with the affairs of the state in a manner that Abba became one of the most powerful holders of the position in history. Also, they both died in active service.

Unlike Abba's, Salihijo's death was very sudden. They were both tragic deaths that we would never wish for anyone. They were both great losses to the country.
But what lessons and tangible things can we infer from the untimely deaths of these two widely acclaimed detribalized gentlemen who were some of the best products to emerge from the Northern part and indeed the entire country? Many, but I will relate to a few here.

Delegation of duties to trusted associates is not a crime but it's the responsibility of the beneficiary to justify the trust so reposed. Anthea Turner once said: "The first rule of management is delegation.Don't try and do everything yourself because you can't. Buhari cannot be faulted for delegating power. But every delegator of power must be ready to accept responsibility. In both Simon Kolawole and Godfrey Onyema's tributes, we saw an Abba who "cared less" about the perception of people about him and his office and how to manage them but for Salihijo, the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund was " too sensitive not to be protected" hence the introduction of the Community Education Programme which provided an uncommon advocacy platform before President Obasanjo wielded the big stick.

The Community Education Programme, anchored by the veteran editor, now publisher, Kabiru Yusuf and made up of the best brains in the Nigerian Media sector, provided the opportunity to proactively engage Nigerians on the need, importance and sustainability of the programme.

Although, Buhari was not too disposed to this programme at the initial stage, with pressure and conviction, he bowed to reason and in the end; the Community Education Programme became a reference point in development intervention programmes in the land. That programme drew a lot of empathy for the fund and enhanced the image of the Chairman.

So the question is: could Abba have done well for his boss and country by "opening up" or "more accessible" while alive especially on the many personal accusations of corruption, enrichment, e.t.c?

One of the many things many have upbraided the ruling party was its perceived "inability to manage the electoral success of 2015". Could Abba, who was also a lawyer and journalist have effectually employed his office to provide an advocacy/perception strategy that will protect his boss and sustain the Change Agenda?

Although Presidential Senior Special Assistant, Garba Shehu defended Abba's quiet and exclusive style thus: "Abba didn't want people to come to the villa to corrupt the President. He wanted to be like his boss who is known for integrity". For me, do you have to shut the doors of the villa to disable corruption?

Salihijo Ahmad is late. So is Abba Kyari. They were favoured. They were lucky. They were brilliant. They were immensely and fiercely loyal and patriotic. They were friends. They both died in similar circumstances - in active service. But they used power differently, because they were different personalities.

While wishing both Aljanah Fiddaus, let's take away the gains, lessons and expectations of delegations and opportunities...

Ondo Guber: Group Rallies Support for Akeredolu's re-election bid

World TB Day: Shortfall of test machine hampering fight against scourge – experts

World TB Day: Shortfall of test machine hampering fight against scourge – experts
By Lanre Oloyede
As Nigeria prepares to join the rest of the world to mark this year’s World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, experts in the fight against the disease have expressed dissatisfaction with the inadequacy of the GeneXpert test machine required for accurate and effective detection and diagnosis of TB in the country.
The GeneXpert test machine is the latest technology designed and recommended by the World Health Organization, WHO, for accurate and timely Tuberculosis test.
According to the experts, early detection and accurate diagnosis is essential to winning the battle against the disease which is regarded as the world’s deadliest infectious killer.
Report has it that Tuberculosis kills nearly 3,975 people daily while Nigeria is ranked sixth among the 30 high TB burden countries and first in Africa with 18 Nigerians dying every hour due to TB.
The experts gave this indication Tuesday at a Pre-World TB Day 2020 media conference organized to intimate stakeholders and members of the public with the activities planned to mark this year’s World TB Day 2020 which will come up on the 24th of March 2020.

National Coordinator, National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) Dr. Adebola Lawanson, who gave an overview of the TB situation in Nigeria, said out of the 398 pieces of the test machine available in the country, only two were procured by the government while the rest were procured by donor agencies and international partners.
Dr. Lawanson stressed that this was inadequate if Nigeria was to effectively combat the scourge of Tuberculosis, adding that the country require to have at least one of the test machine in each of the 774 local government areas, which means there is still a shortfall of 376 pieces of the test equipment required to start with.
Other experts who spoke at the conference also complained of inadequate funding by the federal government to fight the scourge, saying of the 278 million dollars needed for TB control in Nigeria in the year 2019, only 40 percent was available to all the implementers of TB control activities (8% domestic and 32% donor funds, leaving a 60 percent funding gap.
In his remark, Chairman House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Hon. Sarki Dahiru, promised the cooperation and support of the national assembly to TB control in the country, saying the house will work with relevant agencies of government to ensure easy passage of budget for TB control as well as ensure 90 percent fund release by the budget office.
Hon. Dahiru added that he will encourage each of the 360 members of the Federal House of Representatives to procure at least one GeneXpert test machine for their constituencies in order to bridge the shortfall currently being experienced in the availability of the test machine.
The World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is marked every march 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic impact of TB and urge acceleration of efforts to end the global TB epidemic.
The theme for this year’s celebration is: “It’s Time To End Tb In Nigeria, with the slogan, “ Check that cough, time no dey!”

HURIWA condemns removal of Emir of Kano, Asks Oshiomhole to obey court order

By Lanre Oloyede
Prominent civil Rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria, HURIWA, has carpeted the Kano state governor Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje for hurriedly dethroning the powerful Emir of Kano state even whilst there is pending litigation before the court of competent jurisdiction.
The Rights group said it was sad and unfortunate that the national ruling party- All Progressives Congress, APC, at all levels have carried out actions or made confrontational statements that have belittled the functions and constitutional powers of the judiciary.
The group said the action of the Kano state governor to unilaterally remove  the Emir of Kano without waiting for the matters instituted by the Emir to be determined one way or the other is another manifestations of the disdainful way the All Progressives Congress looks at the judicial arm of government.
In another development, HURIWA has warned the suspended national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to stop his open rebellion against constituted and competent court of law and proceed on suspension pending the determination of the matter before justice Danlami Senchi of Abuja High Court or his appeal against the restraining order against him made by the Abuja High court.
HURIWA said it was an abomination for a man in the position of Adams Oshiomhole to even remotely be involved in actions that may be interpreted as forum shopping with the sinister motive to undermine the constitutional powers of the Courts of law.
“We expect the much respected erstwhile unionist and a two terms state governor Adams Oshiomhole to dissociate himself completely from the counter order from the Federal High Court in Kano which illegally aimed at overturning an earlier decision of court of same coordinate jurisdiction made by Honorable Justice Danlami Senchi of the Abuja High Court.
“As one of those who has benefitted from the good fruits of judicial adjudication, we expect the suspended national chairman of APC not to be in the band wagon of lawless politicians who do not mean well for our constitutional democracy by roaming about the courts to obtain injunctions which they think can override orders made by court of coordinate jurisdiction,” the group said.
Speaking specifically on the reported dethronement of the Emir of Kano by the Kano state governor, the Rights group dismissed the action as lawless and a primitive show of brute force and a resort to crude self-help measures since the embattled Emir was already in the Kano state High court challenging his invitation by the Kano state House of Assembly over so-called allegations of corruptions.
“We in HURIWA hereby call on the Kano state governor Abdullahi Ganduje to reverse his illegal decision to dismiss the Emir of Kano and await the determination of the matter the traditional ruler filed before the competent court of law.
The Kano state governor has benefitted so much from the court system. How come he is behind this indescribable affront against the judiciary? Section 6 is clear on the powers of the judiciary and whilst the matter is pending, it is illegal to seek to foist a fait accompli on the court.

Vandalism, Insurgency Threats To Telecoms Quality Of Service – ALTON

By lanre Oloyede

Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has listed challenges of quality of service delivery in telecoms sector to include infrastructure damage, bombed sites due to insurgent activities, illegal site lock-outs, unstable power supply and prolonged power outage, denial of statutory permits for infrastructure roll-out, high cost of Right of Way (RoW), and use of substandard devices by the consumers, among others.
ALTON stated this in its presentation at the first quarter 2020 meeting of Industry Consumer Advisory Forum (ICAF) held in Abuja on Thursday(05/03/2020).
In its presentation focused on challenges of quality of service delivery in telecoms sector, ALTON noted that the challenge of poor QoS in the telecom industry is an issue that requires collaborative efforts of the National Assembly as well as state and local governments, to tackle.
Elaborating further, ALTON presentation indexed a situation where telecommunications operators continue to suffer various forms of infrastructure damage across the country, and noted that such a challenge usually leads to sudden outages or poor QoS.
ALTON recalled that at the onset of the insurgency in the North-East region, operators were also at the receiving end of the destruction that was visited on the infrastructure in the region. He cited Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states as areas where hundreds of BTS sites were either bombed or affected due to dependence on a bombed site. Such vandalism resulted in loss of coverage in so many places including Dikwa, Gamboru, Monguno, Bama, Konduga and Damaturu.
“Operators have been able to restore a lot of these sites, while restoration at other facilities are still pending due to security concerns. In some cases those that were restored have been bombed again, but efforts are currently ongoing in collaboration with agencies in the security services and state governments, to secure sites,” ICAF noted in the presentation. It also assured participants that “with these efforts it is hoped that there will be noticeable improvement in coverage, leading to reduced dropped calls in the affected areas.”
The presentation further explained that the failure of some governmental authorities and their subsidiary agencies to grant the statutory approvals required by operators to build more sites is another problem. ICAF affirmed that “as the existing infrastructure get to full capacity, operators need to build more facilities to accommodate excess call, SMS, data and Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) traffic. Unfortunately, in the past seven years, the FCT Administration, in particular, has not granted approvals for telecommunications sites to be built in the Territory.”

On vandalism and theft, the ALTON presentation observed that this has been a recurring experience of the operators as unknown hoodlums increasingly break into sites, kill or injure the guard on duty and cart away valuable equipment such as the power generating sets, base transceiver station (BTS) equipment and air conditioners among other facilities. It said these criminal activities immediately lead to network outages in the area covered by facilities that suffered vandalism.
ALTON, however, noted that no operator desires to have poor service delivery because of the increased competition that has been engendered by the telecoms regulator.
According to ALTON, “we are in a highly competitive market, where we have multiple players and we should understand that there is no operator that wants to have downtime on its network as that can lead to loss of subscribers to rival operators. The NCC has heightened this with the introduction of the Mobile Number Portability, which makes it easier for a subscriber that is not satisfied with his or current network in terms of service delivery to migrate to other preferred network.”
The presentation further said: “This means if there is any challenge that is affecting any operator’s ability to deliver better experience to its numerous customers, the logical thing is for that operator to take steps to address the challenge so that it will be able to retain its customers. But most of these challenges are far beyond what operators can control. The NCC has been doing a lot to get the buy-in of all relevant stakeholders to address some these challenges, but not much inroad has been recorded because not all stakeholders in the ecosystem are fully supporting the regulator’s efforts at addressing these issues in order to ensure that telecom consumers get top-notched services.”
Proffering solutions to the challenges, ICAF said while the regulator has been taking QoS measurements and sanctioning the erring operators, it must also be acknowledged that it has been making efforts toward addressing all the identified challenges faced by the operators in order to improve service delivery on the networks to telecoms consumers.
“However, if we all agree that telecoms is central to our socio-economic development, then the NCC’s efforts need to be supported by all stakeholders, especially the National Assembly through the passage of the Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) Bill and; we at ICAF also urge the state governors to be considerate about policy measures in order to encourage massive deployment of telecoms infrastructure in their states, as being championed by the NCC,” the advocacy group recommended in the presentation.
In its submission, the Industry Consumer Advisory Forum (ICAF) advocated the need for stakeholders at the federal, state and local levels, both in public and private sectors, to work with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to collectively contribute towards improving the Quality of Service (QoS) delivery by MNOs in the country.
Explaining further, ICAF stated that the collaboration is both urgent and necessary because telecoms has long migrated from being a mere enabler of communication, to an industry that has become widely acknowledged as being the most important enabler of socio-economic activities in contemporary society.
The advocacy body said as with every other sector of the economy, the telecommunications sector has its own peculiar challenges that impact on the ability of telecoms operators to deliver seamless services to customers.
